The course overall objectives are to provide the student with the necessary knowledge regarding Feminism and Women’s Movements as tools to achieve empowerment and solidarity, to make students gain self-actualization through raising their awareness regarding their situation and their status in society, to enable students to look critically at their roles in the society, to build their analytical capacities to be effective agents and activists for change and development.
Therefore, the course explores the evolution of women’s and Gender Studies, and their relation with other disciplines. It familiarizes students with knowledge on the main feminist theories in addition to characteristics and achievements of women’s movements. It highlights some of the main concepts used in gender and women studies. It further explores the meaning of gender, distinguishing between the concept of sex and gender, addressing the social, cultural and ideological construction of gender identity. It focuses on gender and difference, considering how issues of race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, age and abilities interact with gender. Thus, the course will enable the students to analyze the causes and explanation of the universal phenomena of women’s subordination and to have the skills on how women’s agency and movement could be managed through using different methods and strategies to overcome many components of this subordination and open pathways to women's empowerment- Teacher: Maab A
